To top my 'novel'

I am attaching a pdf file of a book I found on the website www.gutenber.org or you can google 'gutenberg project' it is a site where you can find free books! In my previous entry I displayed my personal 'history of mathematics' but I thought that this short novel did the topic better justice. So please enjoy, use in your class, or just educate yourself a bit more.

Management Plan

This file is something I created for my classroom management class. I was so proud of what I had created, I thought I should share it with everyone else! Please respect the property.... I believe in sharing but not stealing! =]

Please note, when uploading some of the formatting as changed, the pages are slightly off. But the document as a whole is all there. Thanks for understanding that technology is well just that.

History of Math

Below is the paper that I wrote for my Educ 339 class. If you use the information please give me credit. I worked incredibly hard on compiling the information. Thank you so much!

Please note that when uploading this document some of the formatting was lost. The content is all there put it is slightly "off." I apologize for the inconvenience.

wanting to see if I can upload powerpoints.... this was taught with my second lesson. We watched Donald in Mathmagic Land (check it out on youtube) it was a lot of fun. I'll have to upload the worksheet I made too!

School is coming to an end.... =[

This will have to be short. I am pretty much done with my pedagogy class. All of my hours and lessons are done. To be honest, I'm really going to miss the 8th graders that I have been working with. But all here in the near future I will have my own classroom; I look forward to it greatly.

Next week is going to be pretty crazy. Working 50 some odd hours and then three major finals and then leave quickly Friday for my sister's wedding (oh woopie).

But it WILL get done!

Wish me hope. Have an excellent Christmas and I will be on here later!

JI Lesson number two

I am currently working on a lesson plan over the Golden Ratio/Golden Rectangle/Fibonacci's Numbers.

Check out Donald in Mathmagic Land, it can be found in three parts on youtube or the DVD is very affordable on amazon. It's a 27 minute video and it's great to help show kids how math is everywhere in the universe.

I am very excited about this lesson, and looking through the websites I keep find enormous amounts of information. But I only have 48 minutes to teach the lesson!

My first JI lesson went very well. Although I tried to 'cram' too much into such a short amount of time I felt as if the students were understanding what I was trying to teach them.

Well, I need to get off of here!

About three weeks left for this semester. I am enrolled for my second to last undergrad semester. 12 hours, one of the "smallest" semester I have had at Southern. I think it will be a nice change of pace.

Some surprising videos

Hi, again! My first Junior Internship lesson went well today. I definitely learned A LOT though. But overall I thought I did decently well.

Below are two links about digital learners, about how our society has changed. If anyone reads this, this is something to see. If not, I know one day it will be nice for me to have and to remember how to set up my classroom.

both have shocking facts about our futures. Your way of thinking will be changed in 10 minutes.

working on first JI Lesson

Word problems!? Oh noooo!! =] This is a great link discussing students and their relationship with word problems and as teachers how we should help students over come that "fear" http://www.homeschoolmath.net/teaching/problem_solving.php

JI = Junior Internship

Sorry I haven't written in a while. I have been incredibly busy with, well, just life!

This week I started my JI, Junior Internship, I will be teaching two lessons and completing 32 hours in Mr. Neugebaur's 8th grade math classroom. So far it has been really educational and fun. I won't lie, I am a bit nervous about teaching my first lesson, but I'm sure it will go well. I will be teaching two-step equations!

Monday I take my final for my micro-class. I have enjoyed this class very much as well. Every week teaching a new mini-lesson. That past taping I have covered Pythagorean Theorem. However, for this final presentation I am going to be teaching the Golden Ratio. I can't wait. Isn't that strange that I can't wait to teach something! Nope... I'm a teacher.

On a more personal note Jeremiah and I have moved out. We are living with a friend of ours. It has been two weeks now and it has been very enjoyable. Just need my oven to be fixed! =]

Other classes are going well. It seems like I'm constantly writing, researching, thinking, planning.... then again, that is my career. Last night I did finish two more sections for my math history paper. It is now up to 19 pages long and I still have three more sections to go! I am very proud of myself for accomplishing something so huge!

Well I better go. Homework is calling my name, as usual!

Hope everyone has a great day, week, and the rest of October!

This week I am doing a mini lesson over the different types of triangles. I found some really cool videos, and there are so many more out there!

Modifications and Accommodations

This blog will be a continuous post of great information that will help me teach to anyone.

For the hearing impaired check out this PDF that offers great tips: http://www.jimrodslz.com/sped/Disability_Info/Making%20Modifications%20Hearing%20Impaired.pdf

Wizard of Oz clip

The classic mess up! Let me know if you can't find the mess up.
clue: the Pythagorean Theorem is (below) and can only be used on right triangles....

He states: "The sum of the square root of two sides of an isosceles triangle is equal to the square root of the third side."

There are two errors. The pythagorean theorem applies to right triangles, not isosceles. Also the theorem is that the squares of two legs equals the square of the hypotenuse.

Properly stated, "The sum of the squares of the two legs of a right triangle is equal to the square of the hypotenuse."

Websites to Keep in Mind

I'm just going to keep a running list of great websites that I (or anyone) can use for future teaching experiences. Maybe I'll get lucky and find some fun game sites too!

Update: this website is great and has premade powerpoints to help teach lessons. Also includes worksheets and so forth. http://math.pppst.com/ and the best part is that it is FREE!!!

KHANACADEMY.ORG IT IS SO AMAZING!

From my assingment:
Examples of possible projects:
• create a series of PowerPoint slides, each with links to Internet resources that provide prior knowledge or further information on a range of topics relevant to the text, to enhance the reading experience
• create a multimedia presentation including sounds, digital photography, scanned documents, and/or a voice recording of an elaborate script
• design a newspaper in which you use technology tools to research, write, and publish an
in issue of a fictional newspaper highlighting historical events and news from the time
• create a digital oral history as a way of honoring your own family’s diverse background
• create a podcast to simulate the sights and sounds of a live broadcast posing as journalists reporting on timely issues
• photo essays
• WebQuests or Internet-based projects
• the creation of an electronic book (including hyperlinks to alternative endings, pictures, and other resources). http://www.myebook.com/
