Student Teaching Update:

I have been student teaching for almost half of a semester! I can't believe that I'm already half way there. Actually, almost closer with holidays and returning the class to my cooperating teacher. I have to teach to Thanksgiving (a month more or less) and then another week before I start handing the class back to my CT. How crazy is that!

There are three things I wanted to address; mainly for the purposes of... I don't want to forget!

First, the website khanacademy.org is absolutely amazing! It's so helpful for math, science, and political science classes. It's great for math students that are starting out 1st grade all the way through to calculus! I would like to thank Steve Jobs for helping in creating this amazing piece of knowledge, and when I start being paid as a teacher, I do plan on pay for the website considering it is non-for-profit.

Second, the rewards/consequence program we implemented today.... rewards: stickers on their star with their name. which lead to a party, that will then also lead candy. consequence 1) warning 2) extra problems 3) referral. Just that simple.

Third, the reason for these rewards and consequences is because I had such an awful day on Friday. I seriously was in tears. My class was so disrespectful to me, our sub, to each other. It was flat out cray. My only rule: respect. Just that simple. It really made me take a step back and evaluate my classroom management. What a teaching/learning moment it was for me!

Overall, student teaching has been fun. I am very busy with all sorts of paper work, and look forward to doing this as my job one day. It is very refreshing in the fact that I do belong in this field, that I'm glad I didn't stick with any of my other ideas for degrees. It's a blessing to know what I'll be doing at such a young age. I can teaching for 30 years and retire at 55??? Or teach for 40 years and retire at 65..... this is what I'll be doing.... for a VERY VERY long time!

Well, I need to go work on case studies. I thought I would just briefly update. After graduation and before baby Gideon Xavier (yes I am pregnant, my husband and I are looking forward to March 4th 2012 - due date- to meet our little bundle of joy). But before then I plan on creating a website and finalizing my resume!!!

School is coming to an end.... =[

This will have to be short. I am pretty much done with my pedagogy class. All of my hours and lessons are done. To be honest, I'm really going to miss the 8th graders that I have been working with. But all here in the near future I will have my own classroom; I look forward to it greatly.

Next week is going to be pretty crazy. Working 50 some odd hours and then three major finals and then leave quickly Friday for my sister's wedding (oh woopie).

But it WILL get done!

JI Lesson number two

I am currently working on a lesson plan over the Golden Ratio/Golden Rectangle/Fibonacci's Numbers.

Check out Donald in Mathmagic Land, it can be found in three parts on youtube or the DVD is very affordable on amazon. It's a 27 minute video and it's great to help show kids how math is everywhere in the universe.

I am very excited about this lesson, and looking through the websites I keep find enormous amounts of information. But I only have 48 minutes to teach the lesson!

My first JI lesson went very well. Although I tried to 'cram' too much into such a short amount of time I felt as if the students were understanding what I was trying to teach them.

Well, I need to get off of here!

About three weeks left for this semester. I am enrolled for my second to last undergrad semester. 12 hours, one of the "smallest" semester I have had at Southern. I think it will be a nice change of pace.

JI = Junior Internship

Sorry I haven't written in a while. I have been incredibly busy with, well, just life!

This week I started my JI, Junior Internship, I will be teaching two lessons and completing 32 hours in Mr. Neugebaur's 8th grade math classroom. So far it has been really educational and fun. I won't lie, I am a bit nervous about teaching my first lesson, but I'm sure it will go well. I will be teaching two-step equations!

Monday I take my final for my micro-class. I have enjoyed this class very much as well. Every week teaching a new mini-lesson. That past taping I have covered Pythagorean Theorem. However, for this final presentation I am going to be teaching the Golden Ratio. I can't wait. Isn't that strange that I can't wait to teach something! Nope... I'm a teacher.

On a more personal note Jeremiah and I have moved out. We are living with a friend of ours. It has been two weeks now and it has been very enjoyable. Just need my oven to be fixed! =]

Other classes are going well. It seems like I'm constantly writing, researching, thinking, planning.... then again, that is my career. Last night I did finish two more sections for my math history paper. It is now up to 19 pages long and I still have three more sections to go! I am very proud of myself for accomplishing something so huge!

Well I better go. Homework is calling my name, as usual!

The classic mess up! Let me know if you can't find the mess up.
clue: the Pythagorean Theorem is (below) and can only be used on right triangles....

He states: "The sum of the square root of two sides of an isosceles triangle is equal to the square root of the third side."

There are two errors. The pythagorean theorem applies to right triangles, not isosceles. Also the theorem is that the squares of two legs equals the square of the hypotenuse.

Properly stated, "The sum of the squares of the two legs of a right triangle is equal to the square of the hypotenuse."
